Hi I am going to finally get my imac to myself (Which i was sharing with my mum and younger brothers) and I am looking into getting some decent speakers a friend recomended Logitect X-230 and I found the Edifier M3200 but I might go for the Logitect X-530 but i wasn't sure i could use them on my imac
I need help for a decision on the best, whether i could just plug and listen because i read somewhere that because imacs only have an optical audio socket i would need an amp or something for the 5.1 but would i need it for the 1st 2 speakers which are 2.1
Whats the cheapest way to get them all plugged up and which ones should i go for?
Links to the products on Amazon.co.uk would be extremely helpful
Cheers Jake
Edit-Please explain simply as i am a noob when it comes to speaker systems

For 2.1 it's fine, the analog signal will work. For 5.1 you'd need a speaker system that decodes optical.

Awesome cheers mate
still not sure whether to the Logitechs or the Edifiers
My mate has the Logitechs and there amazing for 30 quid but some reviewers say that the Edifiers are better confused
Help please
Cheers Jake

And can i please have a simple desciption of what a decoder does some examples of them and the prices

How to define "decent"? Actually the speakers built into the iMac are decent. To do better you have to spend well more then $100. and even then they still be just cheap PC speakers.

What are you using these for? How you use them really does make a difference in what to recommend. Are these for games or music, if music are they to fill a room or just so you can listen while directly in from of the iMac?

Yes, the optical port contains information, in digital form for ALL channels.
