Multiple Startup Chimes

Sometimes when I use Bootcamp to boot to Windows (holding down the Option key) or booting to OSX, I get the first chime as normal but then I get more chimes (but quieter) and the machine hangs at the grey screen. If I hold down the power button to restart it boots fine.
What is causing this?

That might be a POST error indicator.
