Multisession burning of DVD?

I've been able to use the multisession burn for CD-Rs using the disc utility, but I do not get the "leave disc appendable" option when I try to use a DVD-R. Search of forums, Apple support help, and third party software suppliers has not indicated that this can be done. Can it?, and if so how?
I'm using OS 10.3.9, my burner is the PioneerDVR-106D in a iMac G4.
