Hello,
In the promotional video Apple showed, the gesture to open the multitasking tray was simply swiping up from the bottom exactly like control center. This seems more functional to me as I switch applications more then switch settings. My question is, is there a way to change this in settings in iOS 7 to make multitasking swiping up, and control center double clicking? What are your thoughts? Maybe swiping up on the left half could open control center and swiping up from the right half, multitasking.

Swipe up is for stopping an app while in multitasking mode. You hit the home button twice to enable multitasking.

Is it possible you remembered wrong?

You're correct. I guess I misinterpreted the thumb movement in this video at 4:21 to be a swipe. http://youtu.be/rT_OmTMwvZI

After close examination it is just her bringing her thumb back to the screen.

I do feel like productivity would be better if it was a swipe and control center was a double tap though.

Yeah I actually agree with that. There's something about a double-tap, not that it's difficult or takes a long time, but that it throws off the rhythm of moving around the OS quickly.
 
I'm also not a fan of double clicking the mechanical homebutton.

A double finger swipe up could be a solution.

This. They could even add in diagonal gestures like in Mac machines. From the corners, etc. There are many options.

The double-click home button gesture *doesn't* take a long time and isn't difficult to remember or anything, but like you said, it just totally throws off the "feel" of what you were doing. I would love to be able to swipe up the new multitasking panel. Which btw is how it should have been done the first time. It is my favorite new feature, I'm actually using multitasking now.
 
I don't know about you guys, but I feel like enabling swiping from too many directions will be more confusing and error-prone. For example, right now when I'm on safari reading something and I want to scroll down, sometimes I'll inadvertently open the control center. Or even when I'm on the lock screen, I'll accidentally swipe up the control center instead of unlocking the screen. That being said, I understand that with time I'll get used to more swiping directions, like swiping left to delete things instead of right etc, and get more accurate as well. But I think the idea of swiping from corners can make the UI much more frustrating. With OS X it may work because there's a lot more screen real estate, but I don't think it will work as well with iOS.

They should do what they did with iPad; have an option saying "Multi-tasking gestures" to turn them on or off.

A gesture to activate multitasking would be much more fluid & productive than double-tapping the Home button - however, an option to turn it off would also be appreciated by some.
 
hmmm an interesting thought... and I'm kinda swayed to agree that an upward swipe is good for multitasking... but here's a few thoughts.

1) How would that work on the lockscreen? You obviously wouldn't be able to swipe up and activate multitasking from there.

2) As has been mentioned, the swipe up can often be accidentally activated. From a usability perspective, it is far less jarring to have a translucent layer pull up over part of the screen, than to be completely taken out of the app. I'm especially thinking of the less tech savy types. mistakenly pulling up the control center they would think "Oh, I don't want this" and either slide it back down or press back on the screen. But if it pops you out into the multitasking vew, I think they'd be more likely to freak out, "Ah! No, I don't want to leave the app!" Even worse, when pressing on the app, they could accidentally swipe the card up and away. This may not seem likely to some of you, but I've seen the way my mom presses and swipes on her iPad... I've never considered touching a screen a skill before... but... yeah.

3) The current implementation goes better with the design language. You pull a translucent layer from the top for one view, you pull a translucent layer from the bottom for a different view, and then you double press the home button to "pop-out" of your screen for a broad multi-app view.
 
Im against the double tap because I dont feel like dealing with a broken home button...Swipe up makes sense, just like swipe down opens the CC. Home button should equal, HOME and WAKE.
 
I think the best solution would be just to have a multitask button in the Control Center or alternatively swipe up twice.

It's actually a swipe up to open CC now, and swipe down to open NC (as before).
 
Just had a better idea. Swipe up on bottom left to access Control Center and swipe on bottom right to access multitasker. :)
