Multitouch in Mail.app

Just discovered a new function of multitouch in Leopard's Mail app. I'm on a MBP classic from early 2008. If you're in the default view, three finger swipe up and down will move you from email to email.
Don't know if this has been mentioned before.

Would be cool if it worked while browsing a specific message (in its own window, as when you double-click a message). Is there any way to go to prev/next message from that view?

Not that i know of. Probably use multiclutch
