Hello,
My latest backup using CCC could not complete because the destination disc was full. I have a M2 Mac Studio with 1TB internal drive that only has about 400GB. When I looked at the errors in CCC, it show not enough room because the source drive has 2.5TB of files to be copied. This is clearly not possible since the internal SSD is 1TB.
I finally tracked down the problem to the Previous Library folder in the music folder. It had over a 100 files that were each 4.5GB, which again should not be possible since the internal SSD is only 1TB. I deleted all the files, which greatly reduced the system data storage on the SSD. I ran CCC and it completed its backup now showing the correct size of the SSD as 332GB.
I did some testing, and every single time I open the Music app it generate a new 4.35GB file in the Previous Library folder. I checked on my M2 Mac mini if the Music App does this, and it does not. I am a musician, so I use the Music App quite a bit. Any idea how I can stop the Music App from generating new Previous Library files that are causing problems?
Thanks in advance for the help.
PROBLEM SOLUTION:
Was a relatively easy fix. Apple Music did not have an .itl assigned to it, so every time I started the program it made a backup of the current state of Apple Music in the Music folder. I deleted the iTunes folder and the Music folder. I copied the iTunes and Music folder from my M2 Mac mini to the Mac Studio. Started Apple Music with the option key held down, so Apple Music would ask me to choose a library file. I chose the .itl file in the iTunes folder I copied to the studio. Apple Music created a new Music folder, so I deleted the old one. Now when I start Apple Music, it no longer creates a new backup library in the Music folder, and I have reclaimed a large amount of disc space. Side benefit, Apple Music now loads extremely fast. It used to take serval minutes when opening Apple Music for it to be ready. I realize now that every time I opened the program that it was redownloading everything from iCloud because it did not find a library file.
What confused me was having two library files, one in the Music folder and one with the .itl extension. I had assumed since the program is now Apple Music that the .itl file was deprecated. Not the case. I think it would help a lot if Apple settled on one format and not use iTunes files with Apple Music.
