Music App Won't Sync Album Together

Here is my situation: I bought a single, and then later bought the rest of the album. To get the single and the album to be shown as one in iTunes/iPhone, I edited the single's info in iTunes so that it was part of the album. iPhone 5 and iOS 6, not a problem. Sync the phone and it groups everything as it should based on what's in iTunes. iPhone 5s and iOS 7, it REFUSES to put the single with the rest of the album, even though it is grouped that way in iTunes. I have done everything i can think of - rewriting the info, checking and unchecking the songs, deleting and adding them back, manually manage music and not, and NOTHING will fix it. I am starting to think it is on purpose so apple can show the "complete album" banner in my music app and try to push me to purchase the single over.
