Is there a way to play music while the MBP is in clamshell mode?

Of course, since clamshell mode means you have an external display attached. If you mean without a display and with the lid closed, you can keep your Mac awake by using InsomniaX or InsomniaT (rebuild for SL) (fix for 2011 MPBs).
