Contemplating both of these latest MBP's. The 2.2 ones are available as refurb for a nice saving.

Doing Daily music Production in Logic Pro X with video scoring.
I will have an external 2TB SSD drive for Samples so not sure I need the 512 GB for main drive.

Looking at benchmarks, difference seems pretty small between both unit's performance.

Will it truly

make a difference in music production to bump the base's specs to the 2.6 Ghz model?

I am using Kontakt, Serum, UVI, Superior Drummer 3 and other large Virtual Instruments.

Thanks

I can tell you (2.6 model) that it's a freakin' powerhouse. Personally, falcon just feels limitless (even if it's singe core plugin) serum - up to 20 all with complex patches 2x quality, kontakt is making great profit of ssd so no problems over here, don't own SD3 but since it's a sampler i'd guess no problem as well. It's as powerful as last years maxed out 27" iMac (not pro) in terms of CPU, and since our musical load is different with medium load over time with some spikes, so, it doesn't hit its limit as much as guys do in super stress benchmarks that put it to 100 degrees for 10 minutes.

From my knowledge and advice from other Apple users is that when it comes to the CPU and money / budget is a concern, always stick with the cheaper CPU but try and upgrade the RAM. This is because you will see more of a difference in gains with more RAM versus an more powerful CPU (at least in this application).

I just bought a refurbished 15" 2.2 / 16GB / 256GB / 555X since it was a great price. Plan to sell it in a few years and upgrade to the newer redesign when it comes out in 2020
