Another question.

I'm wondering if there is a way to see where the music i have in iTunes came from? What I mean is, is there a way to tell if a song was purchased from iTunes or not?

I have some songs that aren't great quality wise and over time I have been deleting those and purchase a better copy from iTunes. The only problem is, at this point I'm not sure which I may have done.

It's not as simple as listening because I don't notice the quality issues on the computer per se, more like on the iPod when docked in my car. Also, the date added/modified is not reliable anymore as the library has been transfered so some songs are a lot older than they appear.

I looked in the info pane and was hoping to see a line that said iTunes purchase, but I didn't see that. Anyone have an easy(or not so easy) way to find out?

Thanks for any help,
Marc

Look on the sidebar in iTunes:

thanks for the reply. I'm kind of a neat freak and delete that folder almost every time I download something. Otherwise, that would be ideal. I almost wish I never deleted that now.

It should recreate it the next time you download something.

That shows you the songs you purchased, but for your purposes, you would most likely prefer an easy way to see songs you haven't purchased.

You can do this by creating a Smart Playlist and set the condition to be "Playlist" "is not" "Purchased"

You can check an individual song with Get Info ... if it's purchased you'll see "Purchased by", "Account" and "Purchased Date" info.

it does recreate, but it only shows the new download and then I delete it again. I'm pretty sure that's what happens at least.

One way that may work I think is that if I check the info pane it will all be filled out and correct. I may go with that. Also, if I try and re-download a song, wouldn't it tell me I already purchased that song? It does that with apps that I accidentally click on that I already have.

Thanks again.

I was just hoping there was a tab or spot that said "iTunes purchased song."

Yes, it does ...

You can see your purchase history from within your iTunes account. Doesn't seem to be a way of downloading it though.

If you're using a Mac, you could install this AppleScript - http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=purchasedatetocomments - which puts purchase date into the Comments field. Then you could create a smart playlist that displays songs with a non-empty comment.

just noticed, there is a line in one of the tabs that says purchased. So that will be the best. Thanks for the help everybody.

Also, if you sort by Kind, all your purchases will show up as "Purchased..."

I was also going to suggest a Smart Playlist: Kind contains "Purchased" OR Kind contains "Protected" - easier than doing it by hand (or for unpurchased songs: Kind does not contain "Purchased" AND Kind does not contain "Protected").

Thanks. Is the "protected" option gone since that is no longer an issue?
