If I have a downloads folder with my music, then go to "add to library" on itunes and add it, is the music now exclusively on two places of my computer? taking up twice the space it needs to?

Or does itunes use the "my downloads" folder as a reference folder?

have a look in iTunes preferences. by default iTunes copies songs to its library. thats why a green plus sign shows up when you drag songs to your library. this is good as it prevents 'dead' songs from showing up if you move or delete the original song. so after you copy songs to your library delete the originals.

you can either let iTunes take care of your library or take care of it yourself. i prefer the former.
