I did a clean install of 10.15.2 as I wanted to start from scratch with a 'fresh' machine. I have two accounts on my machine both with over 60Gb of music.
For the first account I set the preference to Copy files to media when adding (See prefrences image)
This then gave me the option to 'Import...' (See Import image). With this option I found I had amemory problem when adding ad few as 10 albums the data was copied and the songs appeared in the browser but then Music used up all the memory doing something else consequently it took ages to inport all this music because I had to use small batches.
For the second account I unchecked the Copy preference instead manually copying all the music to he media folder in one go.
This then gave me the option to 'Add to Library' (See Add image). With this option the music was added really quickly, no beachball, no excess use of memory and 100s of albums could be added at a time. This option also seemed to recognise the embedded artwork better.
