iOS Must a modal view covering the entire screen?

I am using a modal sub-view, let's say just like it's being used in the Sample Code application NavBar (my use is different, but I stole the code from there). What I'd like to do is use a modal sub-view that doesn't cover the entire screen. Any thoughts on how to do that?
