Must buy AppleCare+ 30 days after purchase or receipt?

If I ordered a new iPhone 5 with AT&T, do I have to buy AppleCare+ 30 days after purchase (which was a few days ago) or when I actually receive the phone? It sounds like you're supposed to bring the phone into an Apple store within 30 days of purchase. But what if the phone doesn't ship for 30+ days?
