Is there anyway to mute sound with a key shortcut when playing audio over toslink on a MacBook Pro. F10,F11,F12 only work when playing analog audio.
I don't really care that I cannot change the volume with digital out but I want to be able to mute from keyboard instead of doing that externally.
Any suggestions?

Any ideas how to do that without getting it to the foreground.
I just want to mute simfy which is a sort of pandora/grooveshark. An online free music playeing client. I want to mute sometimes when they play adds but I'd like to do that without pulling it to the foreground.
I'd know how to set up a quick gesture with BetterTouchTool to trigger option+cmd+p for mute but if I need to pull the app into the focus it disturbs work.

How do I send a command to an app that isn't in focus?
