Mutiple bit rates in iTunes?

Here is my goal: I want to rip a CD to Apple lossless format but I want to download a 128Kbps version to my iPod shuffle and a higher bit rate version to my 30GB ipod.

I know I can first rip to lossless then convert it twice and then I'd have three version of each song in my iTumes library. This is basicaly usless visual clutter. I'd prefer to transcode the songs as there are downloaded to the ipod.

Any ideas? Automator, Apple script?
