I sold my 2015" iMac 27" a few weeks back and used that funds to purchase a 38" Dell 4K U3818DW. I have a 2016 13" MBP and a 15" 2017 MBP. I decided before I purchased the monitor to use my 15" like a Mac mini.
The Dell comes with 1 usb-c port not Thunderbolt 3 and the usb-c is DP 1.2 where the HDMI is 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. I found when only connected with the USB-C the screen looked pretty good but the UI was terrible. So I first tried the HDMI cable to my Apple HDMI dongle, UI was great but as expected the monitor ran at 30HZ with that dongle.
After purchasing a Belkin HDMI dongle all is good, 60 HZ and 4k. The screen is not quite as crisp as my 5K was but its pretty close and the colors are probably better. The monitor is built like a tank and I really like the anti glare coating and the vertical swivel tilt adjustments.
I have one USB-C cable from the monitor to the MBP and one Belkin HDMI from the monitor to the pro. I can use the monitor as a USB hub. It also supplies 100W of power to my laptop. I am running a cherry switch keyboard and a Logitech wireless MX mouse. I have quick charging for iPhones or iPads.
I am pretty happy with the setup using it for productivity. I doubt this would be considered a gaming setup but I don't game.
Update: After doing a Dell "Factory Reset" I have no UI lag using the USB-C as the driver. I must of choose some settings that where not ideal.
