What's going on? I just hard rebooted it twice and came up normally so now I'm not sure if i have a half-baked jb or a miraculous 3gs . Downside is I don't have it unlocked and I can't since the baseband has been updated to 5.16.05

Anybody heard of something similar or possible reason this could happen?

Like Apple-pie said (sorry bro, just tease your name a bit :D), you have a 3GS Iphone with old bootrom. You can find it out by downloading Idetector onto your computer, hook it up and run a test to prove it.

Explains it. I did check it and it was before the 45 week window. What are the other perks? Still no cigar with the baseband? ;)

I was kind of surprised myself when my 3GS booted untethered. Kept rebooting over and over just to make sure it was real! Old bootroms rule!!
