Been searching but nothing specifically addressing this issue. I can put in DVD's and music cd's but a blank CD-R is just not recognized. Just had this superdrive replaced 6 weeks ago.

I love macs, have had 4 laptops and all the optical drives had issues.

Any ideas?

I don't really have any solutions for you except if you had the drive replaced by Apple you should bring it back to them and get it serviced under warranty.

Something like a CD-R refects back significantly less of the laser's beam compared to CDs and DVDs, so perhaps it's faulty or even just dirty. Take it back to Apple.
