This is a silverdoor dual 1GHz G4 and I was wondering what model would be a good internal replacement, otherwise I was going to get an external burner. I heard that internal replacements don't really work on these early SuperDrive Macs.

I just bought an external firwire drive from www.otherworldcomputing.com. It works great and is compatible with the iLife programs and OS X disc burning. They are a reputable dealer for Mac products only and you will be able to find a drive that is guaranteed to work with you particular machine. I think you can even get a replacement internal 16x dual layer superdrive for about $40 now. :)

Just replace the internal

its pretty simple and cheap to do.

--you ought to be able to get the whole thing done and working for less than $50 and less than an hour worth of work (I did and it worked just fine).

I replaced my Drive in my Digital Audio PowerMac G4 from one purchased from newegg.com for around $30. Did the trick.
