(Please bear with me when I list file/folder extentions for examples.)
Perhaps this isn't the most interesting thread, but I've just upgraded my Macbook Pro and installed a 2nd hard drive. I've always just transferred my files straight over from my previous computer (when I buy a new one) and never organize or clean up the files. Well, I'm finally sick enough of having files scattered everywhere, that I'm starting to organize (and optimize as much I can) my file structure setup.
I was going through some folders and noticed things that shouldn't be there, though I'm realizing I don't quite understand what 'should' go where on my computer.
So, I compose music on my Macbook Pro and have lots of music related files. One thing that's confusing, is that I have my Applications folder with all my softsynths, samplers and effects applications (along with internet app, Microsoft programs, etc.), but some of these synth applications have a presets folder in them also. Is it OK to have presets/library in the folder where the actual app is? Or do they go in the: HD > Library > Application Support > (specific synth here) > Presets/Library? Or perhaps: HD > Library > Audio > Presets > (specific synth here) > Presets?
On a slightly different thought, I have my path for Reaktor ensembles that go: HD > Applications > Native Instruments > Reaktor > Library > Ensembles,Instruments,Macros, etc. But I'm guessing an ensemble is an actual synth type application and not a preset in this case. Not sure if my thinking is correct there, but it seems that way.
I would think manuals to these softsynths should go in the Documentations folder, but these synth companies seem to put them in the Applications folder (in their respective synth folders).
The other thing I'm confused on is the Users folder. Does anyone ever use it to put your apps or presets in? I was told a while ago by Spectrasonics support to put an Alias for Omnisphere in this path: HD > Users > (my name) > Library > Applications Support > Spectrasonics . This was for the purpose of have the tons of GB of samples on an external hard drive, so this Alias was made to point to the external. Is it common for all Alias like this to go in the User folders? Or does it even matter where an Alias goes?
I know there is a lot of topics here and it's relating to music, but any general help getting the folder structure sorted out is greatly appreciated. I think my files/folders have been a mix and match game for too long.
