My ATI 4890 vs 5770 & 5870

Hi All,

I was wondering how my ATI 4890 would compare to the above new cards.

I have a 2008 2.8 octo and I'm thinking about changing the card.

Mainly interested in the difference between the 4890 & 5770 but would also welcome comments vs 5870.

Any one upgraded there 4890 to one of the above?

Not sure about the 4890, but here are some benchmarks of the 4870, 5770, and 5870 on a 2008 Mac Pro.

The 4890 is a small upgrade from the 4870, so in turn it's not that much faster. Probably around the same as the 5770 if not a bit better. The 5870 would be a lot better.

5870 MIGHT be a lot better if he doesn't have the issues the new Mac Pro's are having with them. Check Barefeats and Diglloyd. You will get an eyefull on the new cards.

So will the 2009 Nehalem results be similar to the 2008 (did a search on barefeats but I don't think they tested the GPUs for 2009s)?

I thought about upgrading to a 5770 or something from my 4870 for mostly Aperture work. But judging from the data, perhaps there is very little to gain?

I only read those are a reference, not don't really take them all that seriously.

Thanks for the replies, I'm mainly using Aperture and iPhoto at the moment.

I was thinking of going to the 5770 so i would not have to patch the os after every upgrade (as i currently have to do with the 4890).

I tried a new mac pro in my local apple store, as it only had 3gb ram installed it did not perform as good as my 2008 octo :-(

There seems to be a few problems with the new ATI cards, better the devil you know!

There seems to be a few problems with the new ATI cards, better the devil you know!

I currently have the 4870 from Apple, I also use Aperture extensively, it would be the only reason I would ever upgrade my GPU, even though I do play Team Fortress 2 and DoD:Source.

Do you think you will notice an improvement by switching from the 4890 to the 5770? I wouldn't mind if Aperture ran quicker.
