They guy at the ATT store said that if my contract is within 3 months of expiring i can cancel it for no change and than sign up for the iphone. Is this still gonna be true after the thing that was posted about upgrading?

Well, the thing that was posted:

While payment history is one factor, "how long the person has left on the current contract" also weighs into the decision. Siegel refused to provide exact criteria since "there's a whole lot of variables, and [he] would hate to give specific criteria." AT&T's standard upgrade criteria, however, are published online and depends on a combination of how much your monthly bill is and how much time is left on your contract.

So it might just be that you're eligible.

My contract expires at the end of August and AT&T is letting me upgrade in July, so I don't see why it should be a problem for you.

I say wait.. it's a big possibility that Apple might release a 32GB in the 4Q. Well that's if you want the space.

Don't cancel anything; just get a bloody iPhone 3G and you're good to go!
