When did you purchase it? Less than a year ago? If so take it to an Apple store and they will give you a new one.

Why wouldn't the two most important output parts of an Ipod Touch not be covered by warranty? With either no backlight or no sound out of the jack it's pretty much a worthless item.

If it's within the warranty period take it in.
