I just got my MBA about a week ago. I will be starting classes soon and didn't even think about it until now...my backpack doesn't have it's own laptop compartment. I plan on carrying my laptop with me pretty much all the time with my books, and living in State college the weather is either rainy or snowy most of the time so I am worried that my laptop will get damaged (either by the books, or bad weather). I have hard cover case on my laptop and I also have it in a sleeve. Will that be enough to protect it? Should I get another backpack with its own laptop compartment? Just looking for some input.

I would say the sleeve by itself is more than enough protection if your simply carrying it in your backpack. Just place it on top of your books and your good to go.

This sounds really ghetto, but I made a DIY sleeve out of a padded envelope with duct tape reinforcement, and it's been used it for lots of traveling, internationally too, crammed with all my clothes and gear for multi week trips. It's ugly, and I don't necessarily show it off, but I don't worry about damage while in my backpack. I just want to have a little padding on the edges in case my backpack hits the ground. The bigger concern is dropping it, spilling a drink on it, or dropping something heavy on it while it is not in my backpack.

I used a bubble wrap envelope for a while before I got my perfect sleeve. The bubble wrap performs its function, fits perfect, and is cheap to boot. Didn't feel ashamed at all, proud to had found a cheap temporary solution.

My backpack doesn't either. I got a nice Vatuka sleeve, it's perfect.

Edit: I just looked up booq from the post above. They have a nice graphite hard case that is pretty tempting!

Edit: I'm sold - Gonna get one to replace my Vatuka :D

Thanks everyone for your input! The thing that I am most worried about is when i'm outside walking to class when it rains. I'm worried that the water will seep through my backpack and get my laptop wet...my books I'm not too worried about. Are there any specific cases that are waterproof? Is there anything I can spray on my backpack to make that water proof?

Those booq cases are nice, they're really not too expensive either.
