I am planning to buy a 500GB laptop harddrive, put it in an enclosure, and use CarbonCopyCloner to make a bootable clone of my Mac's internal 500GB Drive.
This way, if there is a problem with my internal drive, I can just swap in the cloned drive and boot from that, never missing a step.
However, I am wondering if this is a good strategy. What if something else fails on my mac like the motherboard - would I be able to boot my cloned drive on another mac?
