I just posted this on the Yahoo Finance Apple forum -- thought I would post it here as well.
I have an iPhone 4 that I enjoy very much. I have a Blackberry (BB) through my work (on Sprint - 3G) -- I never use the browser on it as I don't find it user friendly. I decided to compare how the BB performed when holding it versus it lying on a table not being held. At my home it had 3 bars when sitting on the table in front of me. I picked it up in my left hand and held it as I normally would. After several seconds, the bars dropped from 3 to 1. I tried to access some pages on the mobile CNN website. It took a long time (over 30 seconds) to load a new page. At times, a page would not finish loading. i set it back on the table and it loaded pages much quicker --3-5 seconds. I have a feeling we aren't going to see the media going after RIMM because of this defect in the Blackberry.
I found this interesting that the BB performed very similar to my "naked" iPhone4. I happen to use a silicone skin on my iPhones as I don't want a cracked screen if I drop it. I also took a piece of Scotch Gift Wrap tape (very clear) and cut it to fit over the antenna gap on the iPhone. With either the tape in place or my silicone skin, the iPhone performs great.
I would expect Apple to somehow coat the steel antenna in the future -- it doesn't matter to me as mine will be covered. Seems to be a fairly simple fix. In the meantime, those that don't want to use a case can take advantage of the very generous return policy and wait a couple months. There is no other phone I would want to use if I returned this. Now that I see other phones have similar issues -- even less of a big deal.
