I just bought an external hard drive. The 'My Book for Mac'.
Well, I plugged it it...and ran the 'install' or whatever.

And now, all 10,000+ photos that I had in iPhoto are GONE.

First it said "iPhoto Library cannot be detected".

Can someone please help me here??

I'm hoping these photos arent gone forever.

I'm having a hard time even knowing how to pull them up "retrieve" them from the external.

Also...with an external...I thought I could just drag and drop, or just import what photos I wanted onto the external.
But it seems like this thing backed up my ENTIRE computer.

did it run time machine? I have no experience with the My Books'. When i installed (initially) my LaCie extenal (bought at an Apple Store), i didn't run any of that software it came with. I manually back up what i want.

i dont think it ran time machine.

see...that's what i want to do. back up what i want to manually.
last night, this thing backed up mny whole computer it seems like.

i didnt see an option to back up manually.

i just dont want my iphoto pics to be lost.

What happens if you just unplug it?. Can you startup iPhoto? If so, can you see your photos?
Can you access files on the My Book?
When you say you "ran the install or whatever" can you be more specific? What happened, can you remember? Did Time Machine start up?
And whether or not "something" backed up your whole system (I'm guessing Time Machine) that shouldn't affect whats on the Mac at all in any way. Did you do something else?

Given its all your photos and no backups, my suggestion is book some time at an Apple Store and have them check it out.
