According to my lil bro, the computer landed screen down. Now whenever he tries booting his Mac, a folder icon appears on the screen and the HDD makes a continuous skipping noise. I'm guessing a new HDD will fix the problem?

It seems that way, the HDD might be damaged and can not properly read the relevant information anymore to properly boot Mac OS X.

hopefully the hard-drive has just worked loose open it up and try to reconnect it.. if it still doesn't boot the hard-drive could be goosed..(broken) It needs to be replaced if it is. you may want to search data recovery people/companies to try and retrieve any lost data if u need it but it does cost loads..
