My browsers won't load

I have had a problem for the past month with my laptop. The browsers just won't load, and yes I am connected to the Internet. When I open ANY browser the little spinny wheel just sits there. I cannot do anything and when I click on icon it says "application is not responding". Someone please help me .
Chrome and Safari are the browsers I use.
