But i notice one my new macbook & my hubbys macbook air, the correct date will show even if its not open.

Only once i click to open the calender on my imac will the date change. My imac version is 10.4.11, is this something to do with it?

On Tiger, you can put iCal in the Login Items (System Preferences -- Accounts) to automatically start at login - that way it will stay open and show you the right date -- you can use the Hide checkbox if you don't want the application to open a window.
