My crazy internet

My internet is generally fast. If I let something sit and download for a while, it speeds along. After 20 minutes or so, it slows down to a crawl. If I turn my airport off and on then it's suddenly fast again. Can anyone explain this?

See if anything you don't recognize is running in the background downloading or uploading. (Applications->Utilities->Activity Monitor) Do you have torrents going in and out etc? I gave up on them on mine because it made my internet unusable unless I wanted to wait a week for a movie.
