My daughter bought an 8 gb iphone that is locked. We do have

ATT as provider. She thought she could just use her 3G sim card out of her blackberry in the iphone. That didn't work so she plugged it into her mac to try and register it and had to buy a data package to use it. We don't want to pay for a data package!!!
How hard is it to unlock this phone and even after doing that do all features work?
Thanks for any help as we are pretty hopeless....and helpless!
