When I delete a file on my desktop the icons fill up the space automatically so I don't have empty spaces. When I delete files on my wife's desktop in her account the icons don't move and I have empty spaces. I've tried "Keep arranged" but there is nothing there that works.

My desktop arranges the icons after deleting a folder or file

With the Finder active but nothing selected, press Apple-J to change desktop options. Make sure "Arrange by" is none or grid.
I tried that but it didn't work. Good news though, I found out how to get what I wanted. With only the desktop active I tried Apple-J and clicked sort by Name and that did the trick.
