I made myself a little iPhone car dock, so thought I'd share my experience.

Its basically a universal dock adapter clip-in (£9 or $9, i don't get the apple exchange rate!) and a bit of super-glue.

I have an Alpine head-unit, with direct iPod connector. I had to cut the hole in the dock a bit bigger to fit the iPod cable dock through and it still connects to my iPhone. Just got a sharp blade and hacked away until it fitted well enough for the cable to come through far enough for my phone to connect. Then just a bit of superglue to attach the cable to the dock adapter. Then a tiny bit more superglue to attach the dock adapter to my car. I hung it over a cup-holder, and it fits like a dream, and there's enough room for the dock cable to come down and out the back.

Sorry about the last pic, it's dark out. And sorry i haven't got a pic of my iPhone in the dock, the iPhone's taking the pictures.

nice. how do you get your hand in there to press the release tabs on the dock connector

i have a alpine unit too just like you...with the cable

if u hook up the iphone to the cable DIRECTLY..its only music...no phone...

however, i have never try to hook it up to a dock.....and use the cable from there..

nice setup. i have an alpine head unit with my ipod touch. i just have the cable ran through into the glove box. i just put in there and close the box and not worry about the battery dieing or not having anything good to listen to in the car;)

I have an alpine ipod ready head-unit as well (CDA-9857). I do have the ipod cord in the glove-box and am thinking about moving it so its out in the open. When plugged in and playing music, the phone still does ring... your music fades out the ring-tone fades in. Unfortunately you still have to unplug it to talk and hear but at least you wont miss a phone call while the music's up. Nice job on the dock though, I'll prob do the same but I'm thinking of using an actual dock.

I do the same thing, only it is a 2GB nano, it never really leaves my car except for once every couple of months to sync with the computer.

I just got an iPhone for christmas and I'm trying to figure out how to get it to play in my car without losing the ability to receive calls..

lol what a hassle...

why don't you just do this, but attach it in the cupholder or stick it
wherever else you'd like? $6 on amazon
i love this setup for my room. wakes me up in the morning and charges
cause my outlet is right next to my bed.

cos look how big that thing is! and theres no-where for the iPhone to connect to my stereo. I prefer my method, looks great, and works as I like it.
and your opinion's not valid here, I see a windows laptop in that pic...:D
