my DVD drive can't read data dvds

So I am trying to load a data DVD in my Mac Book Pro 15" 2.16 ghz laptop and spits it out, every time. It reads any CD or a video DVD fine but not a data DVD, such as the original OS DVD that came with the laptop. Any ideas what is going on? Have close to 30 gb of free space in the drive and running OS 10.4.11.
Thanks for any help on figuring this out.
