My Finder drop-down menu isn't working

I went to empty the Trash from the Finder window and noticed that the Finder drop-menu isn't working -- it only displays a small semi-transparent square with nothing in it. Is there a known fix for this?

Not sure why it just started happening; it's never been a problem before. I'm running Snow Leopard on a 2009-vintage Mini.
