I finally bought my first Apple Watch. Series 3 LTE. I like it. It’s very nice. But enough of the pleasantries.

Edit-
My original gripe had two parts—one of which was incorrect, as was pointed out by Dave (thanks!). So please skip the first part. Thanks.

My one big gripe is

(Incorrect first part)
=======
I want the option to have my phone never receive alerts as long as I’m wearing my watch. I.e. I want to be able to turn on Do Not Disturb on my phone while allowing my watch to receive alerts (as vibrations). Unfortunately, right now when you turn on DND on your phone, it activates it on your watch as well. You can’t separate it (or have the choice to, rather).

I don’t want redundant alerts. If I’m wearing my watch, I don’t want my phone to get an alert too, whether or not I’m using my phone.
=======
(End incorrect part)

Apple turns off alerts on your watch when you’re using your phone, but that’s ESPECIALLY when I want the alerts to go only to my watch. It has always annoyed me to no end getting alerts on my phone screen while using my phone. I can’t say how many times I’m in the middle of a thought while reading or writing, etc. on my phone, and an alert (or series of alerts from overactive texters or multiple reminders I unwittingly set for the same time or a mix of different alerts) pops up and completely breaks my fragile concentration. The analog version of this would be trying to have a conversation with my friend and people walk by and slap post-it messages on my friend’s forehead. Just discreetly put the messages in my hand so that I have a choice of when to look at them. To me that’s an obvious advantage of a smart watch, yet Apple doesn’t allow this.

Note- I’m talking about alerts. All notifications should go to the phone’s Notification Center as usual, to be addressed when seen fit.

I sent in a feature request, but in the meantime I’m very curious—why is this not an option already? Is this really something not many people want?

This would have the added benefit of not having others see my alerts when my phone is on display (car navigation, showing a picture/video, letting someone use my phone)

(Incorrect)
=======
or when my phone is not with me.

(End)

Different more minor issue- I’d also like to be able to use certain Siri functions when the watch is locked. When it’s sitting on my nightstand and I pick it up to set an alarm or ask for the weather, I don’t want to have to difficultly punch in my 6 digit code on the tiny screen for something so mundane (usually it’s setting a backup alarm since my phone sometimes has a problem with alarms going off silently). Or if it’s charging then I’d like to use “hey Siri”. (Also gave this feedback to Apple.)

Otherwise it’s great!

Actually Mirroring DND is a setting in your Watch app on you iPhone so you can just turn it off in your Watch app and then manage you watch and iPhone independently for DND.

Thanks! You’re right! I had it set to not mirror, but I remember testing it and it not working, so I was confused as to what that setting was for. But sure enough, testing it again, it works. So that’s good for that, thanks.

That still leaves me my great annoyance of getting alerts while I’m using my phone. If I have DND off, I get alerts in my face. If I have DND on, I don’t get any alerts on phone nor watch.
