He was given 2 G4 Imacs 800mhz with and they both have a black spot on the top of the screen one right one left
any clues of the cause
 
Would you care to elaborate? Does the screen light up but there are black spots on it? In that case the screen might be cracked, and thus needs to be replaced.

And even if it isn't, a LCD shouldn't have black spots. You would still need to replace it (especially if you can see some bright spots, that would deficiently indicate that the screen needs to be replaced).

When you say the top of the screens, do you mean the corers, or do you mean to the right/left portions of the screens on the respective Macs?
