Hi,

I am wondering can anyone help me.

I have an extra internal hard drive (Maxtor) on my Apple Mac.

Recently, I have noticed that the icon on the desktop that represents Maxtor only remains on the desktop for a period of 2-3 days then disappears. I then have to manually restore it but any files saved on it are lost.

Fortunately I do not use this Maxtor drive for saving files to much but I would still like to know how to solve this problem.

Do you leave the drive connected and turned on all the time?

I'd suggest this:
- Nightly, drag the drive's icon to the trash to dismount it, then...
- Shut it down (turn off the power).

Next day (or next time you need to access it):
- Just turn it on again.

Actually, I'd recommend that for the Mac, too. Others may disagree, but I think shutting off at night lessens wear on components, and gives you a "fresh start" next morning. Probably why this old g4 is still running like a top, 5 1/2 years after I bought it.
