I am getting error message saying you'r disk is read only how can this be fixied without reformating the drive?

Have you checked Finder > select external HDD >> GET INFO >>> Format and Sharing & Permissions yet?

yes that would be the first thing I did.

Meaning you have the correct permissions and the correct format I suppose?
Have you checked Disk Utility yet and verified your HDD?

Can you tell us what you already did to check, otherwise we might list lots and lots of recommendations not knowing you already did them and then frustration arises.

I have done the get info to check to see what format the disk was in then disk utilities to "repair disk" and still nothing. Also my permissions says read only.

In which case you need to change the permissions to "Read and Write". You will need an administrator password.
