I don't post often but I had this thought last night:
I think people like to complain on these boards. I can see both sides. In my view Apple has done an amazing job with engineering. It shows how small all the components can be and how they can fit an amazing amount of power into a small package. Power, battery and of course the physical part of the machine.
But those are not without compromises. Its also not without limits of us as humans need to simply live. The limiting factors we have are screen size and keyboards at the moment. While we can use mobile, we’re pro users! We need nice screens. We need a range of screens.
Wouldn’t it be cool if apple made a machine base that was perhaps as thick as the Apple USB Super Drive(this being the largest modular component we’d want to put into a machine.
You could choose your base machine size, 13, 15, 17…….
This slightly thicker machine could obviously fit the maximum hight of certain components that an adapter would just not allow or be cumbersome. Much like people with the old MacBooks put a second SSD Drive into the DVD bay.
Wouldn’t it be cool if for a true pro machine apple could allow us to use the free space as we’d like while creating a niche accessory market for them? But at the same time we could order those options at the time of the machine or later on as needs arise.
Imagine a drive bay the size of the DVD drive for example that would be surface accessible(much like the old Wallstreet Powerbooks)
I could choose to have in that form factor a DVD drive.
or
Perhaps a combo full sized ethernet port, USB port(s) and a SD Card reader
or
A larger battery in addition to the built in battery.
or
Mini Display(Thunderbolt 2), VGA, DVI, HDMI
or
??????????
And even if there were bays of different sizes, imagine filling both bays with batteries and having the built in battery, internal battery bay and the external battery bay. The first MacBook Pro with 48 hours of battery life!
Obviously there are other spaces available in the MacBook that would be as thick as a CD Drive based MacBook. Those internal bays could use additional batteries(not accessible from the sides being the limiting factor) or SSD Drives.
Seems like Apple has taken miniaturization much to far. Which I think is great to have a full spectrum product line. That being said I’ve setup 4 of the new MacBooks and they are wonderful and not everyone needs all the above.
But pro users do need pro features.
