My idea of a better dongle

That would be a USB-C hub\dock. LOL. Basically the same thing as the one Apple released. Magnetic isn't happening. Get over it. LOL
If you try real hard you can almost make out the wording "Designed in California, Made in China" on the drawing.
my idea was to have it be much small and have the usb side facing, i think the apple one is massive for no reason. usb ports are not that big by requirement
Apple is not in the business of making things big for no reason at all, in fact it is quite the opposite, so I am sure there is a reason. It is very possible that there is a PCB inside the dongle.
That's completely untrue. You may want to tear one open and actually look inside. They didn't design it with air in there, like Phil said "We don't ship air"
Your drawing is nice, but it's technically impossible at this point. Open up a couple adaptors, you'll see why.
