I've had my iMac G3 400 for about 4 years now, and recently I bought an iBook G4 933. I wanted to transfer my files on my old mac onto my new one but I couldn't connect both of them directly with the ethernet (crossover) cable. And it also happens to be that I once tried to get DSL on my iMac but it didn't get a connection to the modem. How can i check if it's working or not??

I think you just checked it. If it didn't work in either case, I'd guess that its broken.
