my imac hangs on boot up

when i boot up my imac, i get a white/grey screen etc and it shows a scroll bar about to scroll across, thought it might be updateing but alas after waiting almost three hours screen n imac still in same position.

cant seem to access anything, that appears obviuos as havent booted up yet.

any ideas would be much appreciated
