Help Please my iMac is dying.

My iMac was fine until 10.6.4 came down. It took a long time to install and the iMac has not been right since.

My iMac keeps hanging and on occasion hangs so bad If have to power it off.
Often when I turn it back on I get the Question Mark Folder.
Most times "option, command r p " gets me back up and running.

I purchased a network San and am trying to copy everything to that drive but I have got about 50gig out of 228gig across in 2 days.
I have run disk utility all check out fine???
Permission verify is also fine???
System monitor shows no CPU, Network Traffic etc.
I just see the coloured wheel spinning.

I am actually using the iMac to write this request.

I can get into Terminal and Unix around the system I can see my files etc.
All my families pictures my daughters iTunes library are on this computer.
Can I FTP my system to the SAN?

Each time I reboot the machine it is harder to get it to come back up.

I have an appointment with Apple Genius Bar tomorrow. I have to get the data off of the computer before then.

Any help would be appreciated

Could be your HD in it's death throes. My MBP did this once when the SMC failed to recognize the battery. SMC reset fixed everything, so that's worth a try.

its likely that the OS itself is damaged, as opposed to the hard drive or something similar. best to get everything off as quick as you can and go from there. hopefully the genius will be able to help you!
