My iMac osx 10.8.4 wont share files with anything?? mac or non mac (WD LIVE)

I cant seem to get any device to see my imac. I have been through most the tutorials online regarding sharing files...ie system preferences - sharing -I have file sharing ticked and under options I have SMB ticked. Any help would be much appreciated THANKS
