I thought that only iPad Mini or higher supported the new continuity features???

"Continuity requires an iPhone 5 or later, fourth-generation iPad or newer, iPad mini, or fifth-generation iPod touch".

Apple:

"Continuity features are available on iPhone 5 or later, iPad (4th generation), iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display and iPod touch (5th generation)".

Isn't that a feature of Handoff rather than Continuity?
It works on my third gen iPad.

Found this:

"The Handoff is a notable feature on Continuity, which lets users start a task on one device and complete it on another".

"Continuity lets you answer phone calls that come in on your iPhone on your iPad, and soon on your Mac as well through Yosemite. Handoff, one of the major elements of Continuity, lets you start a task on one device, and pick up where you left off on another".
