My iPad crashed, what happened?

This came out of no where, I was using my iPad as usually and 10 minutes later I couldn't turn it on, so I plug in the charger and it just came up with connect to iTunes. When I connect it to iTunes it said that that my iPad need to be restore but every time I try to download the updated software the connection times out and the download fails. Has this happened to anyone? Any suggestions?
