What happens if I end up getting a new computer and get rid of the old one?

Any number of things. If it's a Mac then use Migration Assistant to copy over your settings and then it will act as a clone of your old computer. If it's not, then you can backup the iPad on the old one and copy the backup over. Finally, assuming you're going to move all your media and photos over to a new computer then it's not that big a deal to re-sync to a new computer.

Ah okies, I thought there was something special with the iPad from different things people were saying here on the forums.

Photos/video/music are easily transferred and books or apps that you purchase link to your account and can be easily re-downloaded.
